Blakely Quilt - Starry

Blakely Quilt - Starry

I am excited to finally be here today to talk about my latest Blakely Quilt make! Back in the fall of 2021, I pioneered a big "let's sew for fun!" adventure. In the course of about a month we made the following quilts:
And the last quilt to finally get a place on the blog is our Starry Blakely quilt! Ruby Star Society announced the reintroduction of the Starry line by Alexia Abegg last year and it is by far my favorite print of Alexia's. In the Spring 2021 catalogue (pg 38) they show Starry and several quilts ideas using it! I actually had these two quilts in their catalogue:
Starry in Backyard Party - Large Throw using 10 HYs
Campfire Glow - Throw Size
Originally I had intended on making the Backyard Party with the Half Yard Bundle RSS sent to me but I switched plans at the last minute to make the HY bundle work with Blakely.
I ended up using 10 different colors - Natural Black for the background and then 9 other prints for the main color strips.
I used the following Starry Prints:
  • Natural Black
  • Black Gold
  • Bluebell
  • Dusk
  • Soft Blue
  • Peach
  • Posy
  • Dark Peony
  • Papaya
  • Warm Red
I played around with some ideas in Illustrator before committing but I landed on this color scheme and only had to adjust the placement of a few strips. The Blakely Pattern provides all different ways you can make the quilt depending on what fabric cuts you have. You can use Yardage, Fat Quarters, Jelly Strips or use scraps or merge some of them together to use what you have! That is what I did, I focused on the total number of strips I needed and then picked some similar fabrics to get to that total number.
The Blakely Quilt pattern is beginner friendly, utilizes strip piecing, chain piecing and it ends up being a pretty quick make!
I loved seeing all the blocks come together. I explain in the Blakely Warp + Weft Blogpost my inspiration for this design. It all goes back to the joy of creating and playing with color.
The Blakely Quilt Pattern is fast to assemble - even with needing sashing because there are no seams to match up when assembling the rows. It makes for a speedy process. I think we sewed this quilt together in just a couple of days.
When I took these photos of the finished top - it felt like looking at a sea of stars. I love it!
We snapped some finished quilt top photos outside our house during a break in the fall rain. Redford was very curious why Luke was on the picnic table.
I sent this quilt off to Karlee of Sewinspired2day here in Portland, OR. I knew right away I wanted to use Starlight - one of my Top 15 Favorite Modern Pantographs. I thought it would pair well with the Starry prints and soften the straight lines of the Blakely quilt.
I bound the quilt in Add It Up in Peach because I had it on hand and backed it in Add It Up Citron! I love the pop of bright yellow green on the backing.
The quilting is the perfect finishing touch to this quilt. The Blakely Quilt pattern is available in my shop now!
And lastly, we took this finished Blakely to the family ranch for Thanksgiving. We snapped a few photos of the quilt in the citrus groves.
