When new fabric arrives with time to spare before welcoming the local quilting community into your work space for an open house, sometimes you just have to whip out a new quilt. Such was the case with this bright, summery, and slightly chaotic (in all the best ways) Star Adventure quilt.
Star Adventure is a one-stop-shop for Sawtooth Star quilts. This "choose your own adventure" pattern has seven sizes to choose from, and almost endless layout possibilities. We chose to do the Large Square Throw (69"), which uses 26 FQs, divided evenly between stars and backgrounds. We followed the "Mixed Up Stars" path, and used yardage for our sashing.
A reminder that this was early June in Portland, OR as we were pulling these fabrics. Early June in the PNW is tough because you are sooo close to summer you can taste it, but it is still unpredictably cold and rainy. Clearly we were feeling the almost summer vibes as we were drawn to all the sunshiny brights and happy little critters in these prints.
Step one of the "Mixed Up Stars" path (after cutting your fabric) is to mix and match your backgrounds and star pieces into their block sets. This is where things can start to look a little unhinged. We all looked at these piles and worried we'd made a terrible mistake somewhere along the way. But this is where you have to just trust the process and trust the quilty instincts that got you this far. And then dive into the messy middle because that is where the magic happens.
See? Magic.
These sawtooth star blocks come together so quickly, and while the Mixed Up Stars can be a bit tricky to chain piece, with some careful organization, you can work a few blocks at a time and build a whole quilt top in no time.
Ashley at Hen House Quilting longarmed our Breakers Star Adventure, using the Vort panto in a bright lime thread. We backed her in Ruby + Bee China Blue, used the same Carolina Gingham that we used for sashing as the binding, and, of course, attached one of our Sarah Hearts collab labels for the perfect finishing touch.. Perfection!
