Star Adventure - the Cozy one

Star Adventure - the Cozy one

Who's ready for some fall cozy snuggly goodness? Here in Portland we've got the leaves changing and falling, stormy weather on the regular, and all the sweaters and boots.  So, it feels like the perfect time to take you way back to last fall to tell you about our Cozy Star Adventure quilt.  (Peep the puppy below for bonus cozy points.)
Last fall, we hosted a sew along for our ultimate sawtooth star pattern, Star Adventure.  For the first time ever, Meghan and I each sewed our own quilt for the sew along, picking palettes and design choices that were distinct from one another.  Mine was the medium throw size, in a cozy palette of golds and corals and burgundies on soft blues and grays.  And nearly all in the softest wovens.  We really doubled down on the cozy here, and put together a 20 piece fat quarter bundle to work from.  From this, we would get all of our star cuts, all of our background cuts, and our scrappy sashing.
We quickly decided to follow the Solid Stars path in the pattern, and that our golds and reds would be the stars and the sky blues and grays the backgrounds.  The gorgeous PNW fall that was just kicking off was most definitely an inspiration in our choices.

After making all of our cuts, we paired a star with a background, being mindful to avoid pairing a directional print with a directional print.  (Week 3 of the SAL blogposts talks about using directional prints in a Star Adventure quilt, and gives some helpful tips and tricks.)
The fun thing about Star Adventure is it comes together so fast, and doing the Solid Stars path means you can batch sew your little heart out...anyone else get really excited for the possibility of batch sewing?  I feel like I've found a quilting cheat code when I batch sew.

We decided on scrappy sashing for this Cozy Star Adventure (the pattern gives options for both scrappy and yardage sashing), and it's helpful to at least lay out the short sashing pieces with your blocks.  We try not to think too hard on this step - scrappy sashing is meant to look random and, well, scrappy - but we like to avoid pairing a short sashing piece directly next to a block with the same background fabric.
Once the rows were all sewn up, it was time to add the long sashing.  Again, the pattern goes into detail on how to accomplish this with scrappy sashing, but we did give a few tips in our SAL Week 8 blogpost.

And boom, a finished quilt top, perfect for fall snuggles in front of a fire or cozy fall movie...is this where I admit to turning on the Hallmark Christmas movies ludicrously early?
Seriously, though.  Doesn't this quilt just scream, "Please snuggle under me with your puppy, a hot beverage, and a cozy mystery"?
Our Cozy Star Adventure is backed in Bunny Hill Pink by Moda, and was quilted by Emily of So Sunny Quilts.   We chose the Chunky Knit pantograph for maximum cozy vibes, and bound it in Broadstripe Pink by Windham.
Now, what cozy fall quilt should we sew up this year?  I'll be pondering that question snuggled up with my hot beverage and a puppy.  See you soon!
