Paper Cuts - the Meadow Star one

Paper Cuts - the Meadow Star one

Last spring, Alexia Abegg released her latest fabric line with Ruby Star Society; it was called Meadow Star, and we were immediately enthralled.  Interesting patterns, fun florals, and the absolute cutest critters were just begging to be sewn into something, and it didn't take us long to decide Paper Cuts would be the perfect canvas for these fat quarter prints.

Paper Cuts is such a great pattern for featuring large scale prints, with each block constructed with one large cut of fabric and snowballed corners.  We followed our own fat quarter tutorial, and used 21 out of the 26 FQs, paired with Kona Grapemist, to make the throw size quilt.

To keep organized, we started by using our design wall to lay out our cut pieces exactly where they would live in the finished quilt.  We were then able to work block by block, pulling down what we were ready to sew and popping it back on the wall when it was finished.

If you've yet to sew a Paper Cuts, it really is as quick and satisfying as it appears to be.  Watching the finished blocks snake up and down the design wall as we worked made us feel extra accomplished.

This top is constructed in columns, but if you too have a hard time switching your vocabulary from "rows" to "columns", you can do what I did...just call them "vertical rows".

And just like that, you have a finished Paper Cuts top!  How fun are those Alexia Abegg prints in this quilt?

We backed this one in a wideback grey Speckled and got it off to Emily at So Sunny Quilts, who quilted it with the Shine pantograph in a fun pink thread.  We got it back in time to bind it in a coral solid to show off at our Spring 2024 Open House, and it was a hit!
