Last April, during our Spring 2024 Open House, a lovely customer asked Meghan to curate an all blues FQ bundle for her. We all got in on the fun, pulling our favorite bolts off the wall and standing back as Meghan did her magic, combining color and pattern scale and fabric texture until the perfect 10-piece bundle emerged. Our customer was delighted, and we were too. So much so, that we set the other half of the FQ cuts aside to play with later.
We tossed around a few ideas for what to do with this All Blues bundle, but turning it into a Granny Cabin was the one that stuck. The throw size (58" x 58") uses a perfect 10 FQs, and with the addition of Bella Coastal for a background, we were ready to go.
The darker blues became our A Blocks, the lighter blues our B Blocks, with an aqua Bonny Calico print as a consistent center for both. One of our Starry prints became the feature for our C Blocks. With all of that decided, the actual sewing could begin.
Between strip piecing, chain piecing, and nested seams, Granny Cabin is an incredibly quick sew. If you are new to quilting, and looking for a beginner pattern that will wow, this is the one. These blocks flew together in no time, and before we knew it, it was time to lay out the top and make sure we had done everything correctly.
With everything looking just as it should, we put our rows together, took a quick photo break...
...aaannnnnd...voila!
This bluesy lady was ready for her trip to the longarmer.
Backed in a Neon Speckled, All Blues Granny Cabin was longarmed by Emily at So Sunny Quilts. She used the Drift - Extended Width pantograph, and we then bound her in a black and white Carolina Gingham. And isn't she just fantastic?? As is the customer who originally asked for this bundle. Without her, this pretty All Blues Granny Cabin might never have existed. We have the best quilty community supporting us. Thanks, all! And happy sewing!
