I have been quilting for a little over 2 years now and I have personally kept only 2 quilts. I have made over 60. Well, actually, my son has 4 quilts haha but that's because I love making baby quilts for him. Anyway, I thought it was high time to make myself a Christmas quilt I would keep. And let me tell you, I LOVE this quilt. Here she is!
This quilt is 72" x 84" inches and HEAVY. It was so hard for me to get her taped on the wall. It took me 20 minutes, lots of cuss words and then finally stepped back and realized I hung it sideways. I was highly annoyed. But I decided to try and turn it the correct way and it is just still so hard to get good full photos in my house.
I love love love Tula Pink's Holiday Homies line. It is wintery and Christmasy without being too traditional or in your face. I love the little animals, my son loves to find them and giggle at their red noses and glasses.
The quilt pattern I used is by Thimble Blossoms - Patchwork Sky Quilt Pattern. I love the overall design but I won't lie, I did not enjoy making this top. I usually am a fast sewer and for some reason I just couldn't get into a rhythm when sewing this. It seemed to take me forever. I also think I should have read through the pattern before starting because I could have found ways to speed up the process. You'd think as a pattern designer myself, I would know this. Buttttt.... I didn't and I overcut pieces. Anyway, like I said, I love the design and am overall happy but I was BEYOND happy to send this off to be quilted so I didn't have to do it.
I sent this baby off to Kaitlyn of Knot and Thread Designs and she did her magic on it. I absolutely love the diagonal plaid quilt design and the density of the quilting. I have sent multiple quilts to Kaitlyn and she knows now that I LOVE lots of texture. She recommended this design and the smaller scale of it and I could not be happier. If you guys need a long armer Kaitlyn is great! She gives 20% off your first quilt and is great at communicating and making sure you are happy with her service. Check her out on Instagram as well, she has some beautiful work!
I had fun throwing the quilt all over my house, the floor, by the Christmas tree, my bed, the wall. And I finally have a place to bomb you all with my photos! And I just can't get over the quilting! (all the heart eyes)
I used a small print black gingham for the stars to give it a bit of consistency. I love scrappy quilts but I am realizing for my brain to work and appreciate what I am making, I have to have some consistency in a quilt. So instead of scrappy stars, I choose to do the same print overall. I also choose to bind the quilt in the same gingham but in red. I love how it ties it all in. I backed the quilt in a print from the Holiday Homies line. Since this was a quilt we'd be keeping for a lifetime, I let my husband choose the backing. I love the black with blue mountains and little deer. Just enough whimsy.
Now all I need to do is wash it up and get to snuggling!
