We made a quilt for the Moda Fabrics booth for the 2025 Quilt Market in Houston, TX. And today, we get to share it with you!
Alli K Designs has a new line called True To Hue shipping to stores in February 2026 and it includes 28 gorgeous prints! It is such a fun collection of line drawings, some bubbly florals, geometric prints and larger scale florals. And I LOVE the color palette. When I saw the fabric, I knew I wanted to really highlight all the fabrics in the collection and choose a pattern that would allow for that.
We chose our Meadow Star Quilt Pattern that works exceptionally well with Fat Quarters and made the Small Bed size which includes 25 blocks and finishes at an 80" square. This size requires 25 FQs for the blocks, a fabric for background, then binding and backing. For simple math 25 FQS + 3 other prints needed = 28 fabrics! BOOM! The same amount included in the entire True to Hue line.
Moda sent us the full 28 piece FQ Bundle plus there is a large panel included! And then I choose 3 of the fabrics included in the bundle to be the background fabric, binding and backing. There is a gorgeous white on white floral print that I choose for the background fabric, the larger scale floral/leaf print for the backing and the really fun squiggly black for binding. I removed the 3 prints we used for the other parts of the quilt from the FQ bundle before diving into cutting.
I threw this line into a mock up because I wanted to be sure all the black prints would still play well together overall. I love black fabric but too many in a quilt that is mix + match it can be hard to not have super dark blocks. But, luckily, it turned out awesome!
I rarely sew anymore with a white based background fabric. I tend to gravitate to mid tone backgrounds or bolder more saturated ones. It was a great reminder that sometimes a white background is classic for a reason.
We released the Meadow Star pattern as a sister pattern to our beloved Meadowland pattern. They are both block based, mix + match friendly, FQ and HY friendly and have 3 main fabrics plus background in each block. It creates a really fun repetitive dappled effect in the final quilt top. The Meadow Star has an extra added feature where the block is slightly asymmetrical and when all sewn together, creates a secondary off kilter pinwheel.
The cutting can feel a little tedious but then the sewing fliiiiiiiies by. I forgot how quick the sewing of these blocks are! But first, we had to mix and match our cut piles into block piles and for that, I just went with my heart. I did not follow the mock up.
The one thing I did make sure of is that the darkest black fabrics were not paired to be right next to each other in a single block as best I could. Each block has a border, a center and a star. So I would make sure if there are two black fabrics, they would be border and star, not center and star, etc.
Alysson and I couldn't pick out our favorite blocks. They all turned out so fun.
This quilt finishes at an 80" square which is larger than our design wall. So we took it old school and crawled around on the ground complaining about how our backs were hurting while we played with final lay out. Once we decided, and our backs frankly had had enough, Alysson sewed it all up!
Emily of So Sunny Quilts snuck this one in for us quickly because the Fall Quilt Market turn around time is super fast. I choose a new to me pantograph called Groove and it is a bubbly leafy/floral design. I love how it turned out. We used a shiny split pea green color thread.
I really love how the binding frames the entire quilt top and makes all the black prints inside the quilt top feel even more connected.
Clearly I couldn't stop taking photographs, that's how you know there is so much to look at in a finished project. The peach leafy backing fabric is the perfect compliment to the front of the quilt.
After I snapped all of these detail shots, it was time to test Alysson's arm strength and have her try to old an 80" x 80" fully quilted quilt. Remember, her wing span is like 56". Let's see what we captured.
We ended up getting some really fun shots. The key is to have Alysson keep throwing the quilt forward as I take a billion photos to capture its movement at its fullest moment. There you have it! She is a real beauty.
The Meadow Star Quilt Pattern is available in our shop now and this True to Hue line will be shipping to stores in February 2026.
