COTY 2024 - Star Adventure

COTY 2024 - Star Adventure

It's that time of year again - the Robert Kaufman Color of the Year Announcement! The 2024 COTY fabric is called Julep and is a gorgeous minty blue green color.
I have taken part of three Robert Kaufman COTY launches. The first one was the COTY 2020 - Emerald - Starry Skies and the second one was COTY 2023 - Crush - Nova Star. And now here we are with the third one! And now I am also seeing another trend, all three of them have been a star based pattern! I just love stars.
The 2024 COTY quilt we made uses our Star Adventure Quilt Pattern!
I always want to highlight the COTY color as much as I can and I thought this fun Alternating Assembly Design would be a great way to show it off! So for this quilt we used Kona Julep for the light fabric and Kona Wasabi for the dark fabric and then added another small pop of color with Acid Lime as the sashing.
I wanted to make a bold statement withe binding and so we went with Kona Black! And the backing is Kona Lapis, a beautiful periwinkle blue.
Another reason we picked the Star Adventure Pattern is that we can batch sew this quilt pretty quickly. I added this project very last minute to our already insane schedule, so we had to make sure we could get it done fast! This was my quick digital rendering to make sure I liked the vibe we were shooting for.
We made all of our HSTs first, as they are the same for every block. And then we did a mass trimming event! It was a lot of HST!
Once all of the HSTs were trimming, then I separated them into piles of where Kona Wasabi was the star and then where Kona Julep was the star. 10 of each.
There is just something so striking about the simplicity of sawtooth stars. They allow the colors to stand on their own and have their own moment. I love it.
The Acid Lime fabric frames each block in a fun subtle way. In person it is fresh and citrusy and adds a touch of depth to the overall quilt.
I really enjoy how the quilt top turned out. Three colors can look so bold and yet soothing at the same time.
When I was sending this off to Emily, I knew I wanted this new pantograph I saw on Instagram. It's called Wall Sparkle by Sew Shabby Quilting. And we used a shiny minty green color so it would blend into the Julep color but show up a little more on the Wasabi fabric.
Just to be sure, I laid down to see if this quilt felt right as a napping quilt. It does.
It's very comfortable. Also, I may have been going a little nuts with all the photos we were taking. ha!
