Today we're bringing you the fifth of our seven QuiltCon sample quilts. Meet Campfire Glow, the Nightingale one, named for the sweet little birds we used in the sawtooth stars. And, psssst, we have kits available in the shop!
The Nightingale Campfire Glow makes a throw size quilt, finishing at 54" x 66". It is made in the Modern Solid style, using yardage for Fabrics A, B, C, and D, and a variety of FQs for the Star Backgrounds. This palette came together as we were all home over Thanksgiving break, Meghan texting us from her COVID sick bed as we trialed spice vs coral, pink birds vs a black and white woven. In the end, this is clearly the palette that was always meant to be.
Campfire Glow was an obvious choice for a new QuiltCon sample, because in addition to being stunning to look at it, it is such a quick make. The cutting is all WOF strips and some squares for your sawtooth stars. I popped an audiobook in my ears, and had this cut out in no time. And then it was on to our favorite kind of piecing...
...strip piecing!!
Campfire Glow goes together in two sections: your Nine Patch blocks and your Sawtooth Star blocks. Both are independent of each other, so you can work in whichever order suits your fancy. This time around, we put together all of our Nine Patches first, strip piecing both sets of blocks at the same time.
From strip piecing to chain piecing, these Nine Patch blocks come together in a snap, and nothing is prettier than fabric just ribboning off the back of a sewing machine.
Now that you can see them up close, how cute are those little birds? The sweetest. The print is Bird is the Word Lipstick from Moda. Like the Nine Patch blocks, these Sawtooth Star blocks come together quickly with chain piecing.
Such a sweet little stack of blocks!
The Campfire Glow pattern includes layout guides for every size, which makes it possible to sew even a Twin Size top together row by row, no need for a giant design wall. But, since we have one, we put it to use, made sure our star backgrounds were where we wanted them, and then sewed the whole thing up. Another thing to love about Campfire Glow? NESTED SEAMS.
It's wild to me to look at a quilt once it's gotten to this state and remember all the iterations it could have been. I can't imagine this Campfire Glow with spice instead of its coral. Or a black and white woven instead of those bright happy birds. She was always meant to be Nightingale.
Once Nightingale returned from our long armer (Hi, Emily!), she sat in the growing stack of "To Be Bound" quilts as we worked our way through more QuiltCon samples. Finally, it was time to tackle that stack....just as a snowstorm was hitting Portland. (You can read about that and what it meant for our Plot Twist Poolside sample here.). So Campfire Glow Nightingale went home with Meghan for a few days, and got her finishing touches at the Buchanan kitchen table.
Campfire Glow Nightingale was backed in Bella Ash and quilted by Emily at So Sunny Quilts. The swirly whirly Perm Pantograph is a fun contrast to all the angles and lines in the nine patches and sawtooth stars. And we loved that sweet bird fabric so much, we repeated it as the binding.
But wait, there's more! We were so happy with this sample, we turned her into merch for QuiltCon. And now it's available to you at home as well. Check out the merch section of our shop for our Campfire Glow keychain and a fun new hand illustrated Campfire Glow sticker, both inspired by our Nightingale sample.
Now, what QuiltCon sample should we show you next?
